When summer winds down, children go back to school, family members aren't on vacation and spending time around the house, your pets could suffer separation anxiety. While you may never have given much thought to how the changes in your household activity may impact your cats, dogs, birds and other pets, it just might stress them out.
If your dog is "acting out" by chewing shoes or going to the bathroom in the house, it could be separation anxiety causing it. Don't blame him, work with him to help ease his stress.
How can you help your pet with separation anxiety? Here are some ways:
- Tire him out before you leave the house. A long walk or a rousing game of fetch should do the trick. If you have cats who are acting out, spend some time playing with them to tire them out as well.
- Leave an item with your pet that has your smell -- a shirt or a blanket. Having your smell with him while you're gone might help calm his separation anxiety.
- Don't make a big deal out of your leaving the house. If you hug and kiss and snuggle your dog right before you walk out the door, she will equate that with your leaving. Do your hugs, kisses and snuggles long before you leave, then when you leave don't make a big deal out of it -- just walk out the door.
Bonus tip! Giving your dog a treat-filled toy that makes him "work" for the treat is another great way to ease his separation anxiety. He will be busy, entertained and getting treats -- that's a win all day!
